During the Disney Shareholder meeting today, CEO Bob Iger announced that Pixar Animation Studios is officially in development for Coco 2. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

Pixar announced that this all-new feature film would reunite Director Lee Unkrich and Co-Director Adrian Molina. If you recall, Unkrich previously left the studio in early 2019 and then revealed in 2023 that he occasionally consulted at Pixar – which was great that the door was always open for his return.
Molina, who was most recently attached as the Director of Pixar’s upcoming film, Elio. In August of 2024, Pixar announced that there would be a change of Director, with Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian taking over the film. Mark Nielsen will be stepping into the Producer role (Inside Out 2, Toy Story 4).

While there hasn’t been any official potential release date for Coco 2, Pixar tweeted that the film would be out in 2029 – however, the tweet was quickly amended to “in the works”.
