Tonight during Game 1 of the NBA Finals, excitement and anticipation was felt all over — and we’re not talking about the Golden State Warriors or Toronto Raptor fans. That’s right, tonight also belonged to Pixar fans anxiously waiting for a glimpse of director Dan Scanlon’s latest film, Onward, set to hit theaters on March 6, 2020.
The trailer, which Pixar noted (via Twitter earlier today) would be released during the game, highlights the fantasy world in which Ian and Barley Lightfoot reside, New Mushroomton. The roughly two-minute-long trailer was so much more than we were anticipating, with a look at everyday life (as we know it) however, instead of humans, insert every mythical creature you can think of — such as the raccoon-like unicorns and sign spinning goblins.
What stood out to us in the trailer, was the elaborate but subtle puns, gags and character designs that really added to the world of New Mushroomton. One, in particular, would have to be the Troll Toll (pictured below), as the signage showcases the rate of traveling ‘under the bridge’ as CASH or RIDDLE — we’re still laughing at this!
The trailer not only showcased humor within the various characters in the world but also in the film’s main characters, most notably Barley Lightfoot (voiced by Chris Pratt). “Chris brings equal parts huge heart and fantastic humor to his character,” said producer Kori Rae. That humor is front and center in the trailer as Barley appears to be ‘putting on’ a fake medieval-like accent with all the confidence in the world. This will be one character trait we hope we learn more about as the brothers embark on “a grand and glorious quest”.
