Pixar announced a new original feature film, directed by Enrico Casarosa (La Luna, Luca), during the 2025 Annecy Film Festival, titled Gatto.
Similar to Luca, Gatto will take place in Italy (this time Venice), and follows a black cat named Nero who begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives (you know, since cats have 9 lives). Indebted to a local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship with a street artist named Maya, that may finally lead him to his purpose—unless Venice gets the better of him first.
The concept art (shown below) by artist Daniela Strijleva effectively captures Nero’s mischievous eyes and stature as he travels along the canals of Venice.

FILM DETAILS
Our friend Drew Taylor with The Wrap was in attendance at Annecy and shared details from the announcement. Pete Docter drew cheers when he took to the Annecy Film Festival stage to announce Gatto, hitting theaters on June 18, 2027. Docter went on to share that director Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren would be reuniting once again as a filmmaking duo.
The audience was able to preview some animation tests from Gatto showcasing a painterly look, unlike anything Pixar has done before. With our friend noting, “It looks to be another technological feat that is also a truly beautiful original – adorable, exciting, and a little spooky“.
OUR THOUGHTS
We couldn’t be more excited about this new original film. At the same time, we are very excited about the growing list of upcoming Pixar films, including Hoppers, Toy Story 5, and Incredibles 3. This cat-centered film has already captured our attention, and we look forward to hearing more. With a release date of June 18, 2027, we can expect to hear more details soon.

We lost the sequels en 2027 but we never lost the sequels when we announced D23 in 2026.
