Just over a year ago during the 2014 Annual Disney Shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger revealed that a sequel to The Incredibles was in the works. As news traveled across the internet, Pixar fans rejoiced as they would finally be able to visit their favorite superhero family once more. While no additional details were released about the film during the announcement, fans were left to speculate on possible directors, writers, and the storyline. Speculations are starting to clear as Brad Bird has shared in an interview with Ophira Eisenberg on NPR’s Ask Me Another show, that he is currently writing The Incredibles 2.
Ophira: The Incredibles 2 is also going to happen?
Brad Bird: It’s percolating. Yeah, I mean…I’m just starting to write it so, we’ll see what happens (audience cheers).
It was only two years ago that The Hollywood Reporter discussed the potential for the frequently fan-requested sequel with Brad Bird, “I have been thinking about it. People think that I have not been, but I have”.
“I love those characters and love that world. I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another [Incredibles] film, and if I can get ‘em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that. I like the idea of moving a little more quickly in films. I’m looking for ways to accelerate the pace a little bit and figure out a way to keep creative control over these movies to a level where I’m comfortable with the end result but also speed them up a bit and make more of them. I have many different films I wanna make. It’s like a big airplane hangar and I have different projects on the floor; half-assembled in my brain. I’m interested in all of them. You kind of have to move on the ones people are willing to pay for and the ones you’re most excited about.”
With Bird’s live-action film Tomorrowland about to have its theatrical release this upcoming May, we can only imagine that his focus will shift back to the Pixar and the superb superhero family. Whether he assists with formulating a team, directs the film, or solely writes the story – consider us excited as the pre-production has begun on another Pixar film. As a bonus, be sure to also listen to the extended audio clip (also on the Ask Me Another site) of Brad talking about his experience with fine dining in France as he was thrust into the director’s chair on Ratatouille.
