Piston Peak National Park – New Details on Cars Expansion at Magic Kingdom

Disney announced details for the Cars-themed expansion, Piston Peak National Park, at Magic Kingdom. Inspired by the Rocky Mountains and American Frontier, it will include a visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, and immersive landscapes. Although some attractions will close, parts of Rivers of America may remain. Construction begins this summer.

Disney has announced new details surrounding the new Cars-themed expansion, Piston Peak National Park, in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort. News of this expansion first made waves with fans when it was revealed during the 2024 D23 Expo. This expansion will take place in the fictional Piston Peak, inspired by the Rocky Mountain region, the history, and iconic sights of the American Frontier, as well as its national parks.

PISTON PEAK

Inside Piston Peak, guests will be able to explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails, and so much more, all set inside the “Cars” universe. Disney Imagineers are working on creating a style of architecture called “Parkitecture”, which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.

You will notice from the concept art that trees will provide a natural barrier between the off-road rally and other parts of the surrounding lands at Magic Kingdom (Frontierland and Liberty Square). A mountainous landscape with calming waterways will ensure that this new Piston Peak National Park is a truly immersive experience.

In addition to the landscape, Disney Imagineers have been busy testing new ride vehicles and terrain, as seen in the video embedded below.

COMPLETION DATE?

When the announcement of Piston Peak National Park was made, many diehard Magic Kingdom fans were sad to hear that Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat would be closing forever. However, from the looks of the newly released concept art, it seems that some of Rivers of America may be staying intact.

Imagineers will begin working on Piston Peak National Park this summer with the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat set to close July 7. While no exact opening date for Piston Peak National Park has been revealed many fans are speculating a 2027 opening date
