Today (July 5), director Lee Unkrich announced that Pixar’s Coco will premiere on the opening night of the 15th Annual Morelia International Film Festival on October 20, 2017.
If you recall back in early June, it was announced that Coco would premiere exclusively in Mexico on October 27 — a full three-and-a-half weeks before the U.S. release of November 22.
This makes sense for several reasons — most notably, the film gets it in theaters just before the actual Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead holiday is from October 31-November 2) and it also shows the respect that Pixar has for the culture by releasing the film internationally first — a first for the studio.
The screening of Coco will mark the first time an animated film will open the Morelia International Film Festival. Watch the video clip below as filmmakers, Darla K. Anderson (producer), Lee Unkrich (director), and Adrian Molina (co-director/writer) share their excitement for their film and the upcoming fall premiere.
