The official Toy Story 5 trailer has dropped, and boy, is it packed full of action, new characters, and a ton of adventure.
Watch the new trailer on Pixar’s YouTube page, or embedded below, and then read on for new vocal cast announcements, our trailer observations (with screencaps), and the announcement of who will score the film.
TOY STORY 5 TRAILER NOTES
At the end of Toy Story 4, Woody separates from the gang to help find and assist lost toys. One of the largest concerns fans had when the new film was announced is if Woody would return. And, how would it work? Wouldn’t it undo everything that Toy Story 4 stood for?
Well, we have our answer as to how it works, and for what it’s worth, we think it’s pretty clever (even if we never wanted Woody to split off from the gang in the first place).
Woody and Jessie use a pair of walkie-talkies (with a “J” for Jessie and “W” for Woody written on them) so they can stay in touch. Jessie reaches out to Woody after the new tech iPad-like device arrvies fulling taking Bonnie’s attention away from her toys.

When Jessie asks how his lost-toy mission is going, Woody notes, “We’re finding more abandoned toys each day.” He alludes to the fact that tech has caused a drop in interest in traditional toys.
Jessie says, “Tech’s invaded our house, too.” Woody seems to “get” the attraction of technology, saying, “I don’t know Jessie, toys are for play, but tech is for – everything.”
Jessie’s closing line of “I’m losing Bonnie to this device” is a powerful one that grabs your attention.
These lines sum up the plot of Toy Story 5 pretty well – the battle of toys and tech. And, even the toys can’t fully deny that tech is pretty appealing, too!

TOY STORY 5 POSTER
Along with the new trailer, a new poster for the film was released, showing the toys looking quite concerned as Lilypad gives a sinister glance.

We also wanted to share a recent Brazilian poster that was released to promote the film. It has a similar look to this poster, but the toys and Lilypad are all in Bonnie’s backpack.

TOY STORY 5 SCORE
We were thrilled to learn that Randy Newman will continue his legacy and provide the score for Toy Story 5. Although some other Toy Story projects, like short films or the television specials, have been scored by the likes of Michael Giacchino, we think a full-length film makes the most sense for Randy Newman to score.

OTHER TRAILER OBSERVATIONS
After we started digging into the trailer, we spotted a few other observations that we wanted to chat about.
LILYPAD – It was great to finally get a closer look at this new character. We can’t express our overall love for the character design here – from the user interface with tiny lily pads instead of standard circle buttons to tap, to the way her hands can twist, turn, and even swipe her own screen, is a top-notch creation.

We had a good laugh scrolling through all the little details, like in the above screenshot, the social media site is Ribbit. This is genius, as it plays into the Lilypad theme and also ties into the real-world Reddit.
There’s even a little nod to how invasive tech is, and on the Ribbit website, it provides a link to what would normally be a Privacy Policy…but it says “Lack of Privacy Policy.” Ha!

We also spotted that Lilypad is running a few shell scripts (“Ladybuggy” Unix script) that appear to reference a GPS tracker imported from eggman.pondnet. And, there was also an announcement of a cheerful Hippo GPS toy – is this tying into that toy somehow? (Also, note the name “Eggman” and “Pondnet” that tie into the Easter Egg screencaps below.)
We’re wondering if this is ultimately a script that tracks all the other Lilypad devices, which we know there are more of, since we saw Bonnie hanging out with other kids using them. Or, is this a “calling home” script to upload data to the product servers – a la tracking that other big tech does?

BONNIE – Jessie notes that she and the toys have been working all summer to try and get Bonnie to make friends – that doesn’t seem to have worked. But then we see Bonnie seemingly make friends with a group of kids who also have these tech devices. So, technology may have helped in this scenario, too – Continuing the trend of “it’s not that easy to just say tech is bad.” Maybe it did help her make friends…but does it help them be good friends and communicate? Hmm, another layer.
We also found it kind of sad seeing how Jessie and Bullseye were being played with, and then they’re shown sitting on the chair, untouched, in multiple scenes in a row. Bonnie is immediately entranced by the new technology gift. Even her Dad is on his phone in the background of the second image below.

TRAILER EASTER EGGS
We spotted a few fun easter eggs, or potential nods in the trailer that we wanted to call out, too.
You’ll notice several mentions of Eggman, which is a nod to Pixarian Ralph Eggleston, who passed away in 2022. Eggman was Ralph’s longtime nickname and can even be spotted in the first Toy Story film as Eggman Movers.

The Eggman name continues in Toy Story 5, and Eggman must now be a tech company, as they are the makers of Lilypad and Smarty Pants (and probably other tech-based toys).

In addition to the Eggman logo on the box, we also saw a mention of “The Pond,” which some folks online think may be a nod to the “Pond Rules” in Pixar’s other upcoming film, Hoppers. The Pond name may also just tie into the Lilypad and frog theme, but we know there’s a service called Pondnet in the Lilypad script. Time will tell!

Did you spot anything else in the new trailer? Let us know in the Pixar Post Forum or leave a comment below.
We also wanted to share these two additional trailer screencaps, because we just loved them. A nice hug between old friends and an awesome view of the new high-tech Buzz Lightyear toys emerging from the water, ready for battle…or misadventures.
