During our recent Toy Story 5 press event at the Disneyland Resort. Pixar created a traveling archive for us, so we could see concept art, storyboards, and more from all five Toy Story films.
The team curated five pieces from Toy Story 5, showcasing a broad range of concept art of the new characters, an exploratory sketch of new tech features for Buzz Lightyear, and a beautiful sketch of Jessie.
The Pixar archive is such an amazing place; it’s unreal that we have even stepped foot in there. It houses all the original sketches, ideas, paintings, etc., from all your favorite Pixar films – even the ones that never made it to the screen. Artists and directors will often go to the Pixar archive to pull artwork on earlier films for inspiration – especially when working on sequels.
In fact, Director Kenna Harris did just that as they requested to see earlier artwork of Jessie from previous films.
While the concept art we saw during the Toy Story 5 event were copies, with the originals safe in the archive back in Emeryville. They were just as exciting; you could see the defined pencil markings and the wrinkling of the paper. It still felt very organic and “behind-the-scenes”.
